The Future of Aviation: Unpacking the "Securing Growth & Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act"

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

By Drea Hickman, PR Director, HYSKY Society

The aviation industry is on the cusp of a revolution. As we look to the skies, we see not only the promise of new technologies but also the potential for new policies that could shape the future of flight. One such policy is the "Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act", a comprehensive legislative framework that could significantly impact various sectors of the aviation industry, including advanced air mobility, hydrogen, airports, and air taxis.

Advanced Air Mobility: Drones, eVTOLs, and Beyond

The Act recognizes the importance of drones, eVTOLs, and new forms of air transportation in the future of aviation. These technologies, which include distributed propulsion, vertical take-off and landing, powered-lift, non-traditional power systems, and autonomous technologies, are key components of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Regional Air Mobility (RAM), and Urban Air Mobility (UAM). These forms of air transportation are set to revolutionize how we move people and goods. The Act recognizes the importance of these new forms of air transportation and the need for regulatory frameworks to ensure their safe and efficient operation.

Hydrogen: Fueling the Future

The Act acknowledges the potential of hydrogen as a means to decarbonize aviation. It expands the Center of Excellence for Alternative Jet Fuels and Environment (ASCENT) to conduct research on hydrogen to increase aviation decarbonization. This aligns with the information in the "U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap", which outlines the DOE's strategy for clean hydrogen. The Act's focus on hydrogen research and development signals a promising future for hydrogen-powered aviation.

Airports and Air Taxis: Infrastructure for Innovation

The Act also discusses the role of airports in the future of aviation. It defines an airport as a landing area used regularly by aircraft for receiving or discharging passengers or cargo. This definition is broad enough to include the vertiports and other infrastructure necessary for the operation of air taxis and other AAM vehicles. As we look to the future, we must consider how our infrastructure can support these new forms of air transportation.

Amendments: Shaping the Future

The Act includes several amendments that could impact the sectors of interest. For example, it calls for the FAA to exercise leadership in creating federal and international policies related to the safe and efficient use of hydrogen in aviation. It also calls for the FAA to update or modify existing policies related to hydrogen. These amendments could have significant implications for the development and deployment of hydrogen-powered aircraft, drones, eVTOLs, and other advanced air mobility vehicles.

At HYSKY Society, we are committed to advancing hydrogen aviation and fostering a community of innovators and enthusiasts. Our HYSKY Monthly webinars offer a platform for distinguished speakers to share their insights and expertise on hydrogen aviation. These free webinars are held on the third Monday of every month, providing an opportunity for anyone interested in the future of aviation to learn from industry leaders.

Additionally, we are excited to announce FLYING HY, the world’s largest hydrogen aviation event, taking place on October 10-11, 2023 in Grand Forks, ND. This event will bring together industry experts, policymakers, and enthusiasts to discuss the latest developments in hydrogen aviation and explore the future of flight.

In conclusion, the "Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act" provides a legislative framework that recognizes the importance of advanced air mobility, hydrogen, airports, and air taxis in the future of aviation. It calls for research, policy development, and regulatory updates to facilitate the safe and efficient operation of these new forms of air transportation. As we at HYSKY Society continue to advance hydrogen aviation, we are excited about the potential of this Act to shape the future of our industry. We invite you to join us at our HYSKY Monthly webinars and the FLYING HY event to learn more and be part of this exciting journey.
